Arsenicum Album
Arsenicum is a frequently indicated medicine.
It affects every part of our body.
Characteristics: Anxiety, restlessness, prostration, burning and cadaveric
odors.
The surface of the body is pale, cold, clammy, and sweating, and the aspect
is cadaveric.
Chronic sickness: great debility, anaemia, from long exposure to malarial
influence, in the poorly fed.
Anxiety intermingled with fear, with impulses, with suicidal inclinations,
with sudden freaks and with mania.
Delusions and insanity. Sadness to a great extreme, full of suicidal
tendencies.
Restlessness: constantly moves, if he is able to get up, keeps moving from
one place to another, and when thoroughly exhausted, he gets back into bed
again; prostration takes the place of anxiety and restlessness, and s/he
appears like a cadaver. Child goes front nurse to mother, and from one
person to another.
When so weak that s/he is unable to sit up, the patient tosses and turns
from side to side.
Burning: in throat, in all the mucous membranes in stomach, bladder, vagina,
lungs (threatened gangrenous inflammation, pneumonia), feels as if coals of
fire were in the parts.
Burning in the brain - sensation of heat in the inner head with pulsation is
ameliorated by the cold bathing.
In rheumatic state that affects the scalp and outward nerves, when there is
burning, it is ameliorated by heat.
Headache: congestive with sensation of heat and burning inside the head,
feeling as if the head would burst, face is flushed and hot, > from cold
applications and in the cool open air (Arsenic patient is chilly so in
congestive headaches the patient may be sitting in the room with clothing
piled on to keep the body warm and with the window open to relieve the
congestion of the head).
There is relief of all the complaints of the body from wrapping up and from
warmth in general, and relief of the complaints of the head by cold, except
the external complaints of the head (neuralgias of face and eyes, and above
the eyes), which are better from heat and from wrapping up.
Skin : All night the itching and burning alternate, burning for a minute,
scratches it until it is raw, but soon the itching begins again and it seems
that s/he has no rest.
Acridity: secretions and excretions are acrid; excoriate the parts, causing
burning. Discharge from the nose, eyes and all the fluids from the various
orifices cause redness around the parts.
Ulcers: burning, thin, bloody fluid discharged excoriates the parts round
about, odor of the discharge is putrid.
Putridity: menstrual flow, leucorrhoea, faeces, urine, expectoration, all
the discharges are putrid. Ulcer is so putrid that it smells like
decomposing flesh.
Stool: putrid, like decomposed flesh, putrid blood.
Uterus: menstrual flow, leucorrhoea are putrid.
Tendency to bleeding: bleeds easily; may bleed from any place. Vomiting of
blood; bleeding from lungs and throat. Bloody discharge from mucous
membranes, haemorrhage from bowels, kidneys, bladder and uterus. Haemorrhage
of black blood and discharges that are offensive.
Gangrene and sudden inflammatory conditions like gangrenous and
erysipelatous inflammations. Parts suddenly take on erysipelas; parts that
are injured suddenly take on gangrene. Sudden inflammation that tends to
produce malignancy.
Bowels: Inflammation , horribly offensive discharge, vomiting of clots
of blood, great burning with tympanitic condition, a gangrenous
inflammation, violent, sudden and malignant; has anxiety, prostration,
fear of death, chilliness, the patient wanting to be covered warmly.
Secale: patient wants to be uncovered, wants things cold, wants the
windows open.
Thirst for small quantities often, just enough to wet the mouth.
Bryonia has thirst for large quantities far apart, but Arsenicum little
and often, or violent unquenchable thirst.
Thoughts of death and of the incurability of his complaints.
Thoughts crowd upon him; he is too weak to keep them off or to hold
on to one idea.
There is either thirst for ice cold water, only enough to
moisten the mouth, or there is thirst for water in large
quantities and yet it does not quench the thirst; but this
thirsty stage goes on to another in which there is aversion to
water, and hence we see that in chronic diseases.
Arsenicum is thirstless (chronic cases). In mania (chronic
disease); patient is tranquil, if we go in the past history
of such patients we find that in the earlier stages, in
order to be an Arsenicum case, he must have gone through the
Arsenicum restlessness, anxiety and fear.
Fear , fear to be alone. Fears something is going to injure
him/her when alone. Dreads solitude and wants company
(because in company he can talk and put off the fear;thinks
he is going to die and wants somebody with him) but if not
cured as this insanity increases s/he fails to appreciate
company and the fear comes in spite of it. Fear and horror <
in the dark and many complaints come on in the evening as
darkness is coming on.
Pains and aches <in the morning, < from 1-2 P.M. and from
1-2 A.M.
Cardiac dyspnoea, asthma (in the evening in bed or after
midnight; from 1-2 o'clock there is attack of mental
anxiety, dyspnoea, fear of death, coldness, and patient is
covered with, cold sweat}.
Patient is chilly feels freezing, hovers around the fire,
cannot get clothing enough to keep warm, a great sufferer
from the cold.
Dropsical conditions {extremities; cavities; swelling about
the eyes (lower eyelid; in Kali carb. the swelling is more
in the upper eyelid than the lower, between the lid and the
brow), face} pits upon pressure.
Periodicity: Malarial affections. Every other day, fourth
day, seven days, two weeks.
Alternation of states. In bodily complaints patient sits
over the fire and shivers, wants plenty of clothing, and
wants to be in a warm room in headache while he wants the
body warm he wants the head washed in cold water, or wants
the cold air upon it.
(Phosphorus- complaints of stomach and head are > from cold,
i. e., he wants cold applications upon the head with head
sufferings, and wants cold things in the stomach with
stomach complaints, but in all the complaints of the body he
is > from heat).
On going in cool air, s/he commence to cough (chest
troubles). Neuralgia and rheumatic affections when affect
the head, then patient wants the head wrapped up, > from
heat.
In congestive conditions of the head, s/he is better with
his head very cold.
Alumen - pressure in the top of the head >from hard pressure
; alternates with constant urging to urinate (irritable
bladder alternates with pain on top of the head).
Many anti-psoric remedies have an alternation of states.
Head symptoms alternate with physical symptoms.
Podophyllum - headaches alternate with diarrhea.
In Arnica the mental symptoms alternate with uterine
symptoms.
Nat. mur. has congestive headaches from walking and becoming
heated; especially from walking in the sun.
Head pain of a congestive character in intermittent fever,
as if the head would burst. There is no thirst during the
chill except for hot drinks; during the heat there is thirst
little and often for water enough to moisten the mouth
(almost no thirst), during the sweat there is thirst for
large drinks.
Thirst begins with the beginning of the heat and increases
as the dryness of the mouth; he desires only to moisten the
mouth until he breaks out in a sweat, and then the thirst
becomes a desire for large quantities very often, and the
more he sweats the more desire he has for water.
Headache during the chill and heat; this grows better
towards the end of the heat as the sweat breaks out, it is
ameliorated by the sweat.
Skin: Tendency to shrivel; a prematurely old, wrinkled
appearance of the skin comes on (chronic headaches,
congestive headaches, malarial complaints). The mucous
membrane of the lips and mouth often shrivels and becomes
wrinkled (diphtheritic membrane and exudation in the throat
is leathery looking and shriveled; malignancy, putridity,
gangrenenous odor).
Oedema of face and scalp, pits upon pressure and there is a
little crepitation under it from pressure; eruptions on
scalp, very sensitive (hair cannot be combed).
Sensitiveness is a feature of Arsenic, over sensitiveness
of all the senses. Over sensitiveness to the circumstances
and surroundings of the room.
Extremely fastidious patient.
The gold headed cane patient.
A person sick in bed is in great distress if every picture
on the wall does not hang perfectly straight.
Morbid fastidiousness.
Discharges from the eyes (conjunctivitis) acrid, discharge
that excoriates the eye, making the canthi red and causing
granulation with burning. The burning is > from washing in
cool water, also > from dry heat. Corneal ulcers.
Hypertrophy beginning in patches , form scars, and in old
ulcerated patches little growth similar to a pterygium
growing towards the centre of the eye and threatening
blindness. Inflammations with swelling, burning and
excoriating discharge; bag-like swelling , baggy lids and
little bags forming under the eyes.
Face: waxy, pale, appearance of a broken down constitution ,
dropsical condition.
Sneezing from every change in the weather, always chilly and
suffers from drafts, < in cold, damp weather; always
freezing, chilled through.
Pale, waxy, broken down constitution, catarrhal discharges
from nose, <looking at a bright light (become almost blind).
Coryza: Sneezing, inflammatory condition of nasal cavity,
throat, larynx and chest, cold begins in the nose and goes
down into the throat; old, chronic catarrhal troubles of
the nose, bleeds easily, patient is always sneezing and
taking cold, chilly, pallid, tired, restless, full of
anxiety in the night (troublesome dreams).
Tendency to ulcerate: sore throat, eyes, nose.
Syphilis, malaria, blood poisoning of some kind (dissecting
wound, from erysipelas, typhoid fever, zymotic states
improperly treated, poisoning with quinine and like
substances) that break down the blood and establishes a
state of anaemia. If any discharge is established the
patient is relieved thereby (if an ulcer comes upon the leg,
if a leucorrhea comes on).
Chronic state from retained secretions (a form of blood
poisoning: suppressed ear discharges, throat discharges,
suppressed leucorrhea and ulcerations), anaemic state that
follows each suppression (results of the cautery, of local
applications to stop leucorrhoea and other discharges and to
heal up ulcers and skin eruptions); patient becomes waxy and
pallid, sickly looking; these catarrhal discharges come on
as a means of relief because of the suppression of some
other condition ( on suppression of leucorrhoea comes
thick, bloody or watery discharge from the nose; when an
ulcer has been dried up by external applications; ear
discharge has been stopped by the outward application).
Sulphur, Calcarea and Arsenicum are suitable for the
catarrhal discharges that come from suppressions, in broken
down constitutions.
Conditions brought about from the absorption of animal
poisons, symptoms brought on from a dissecting wound
(Arsenic and Lachesis).
Always take cold easily (sensitive to cold); attackes of
cold on the slightest provocation; when s/he has thick
discharge s/he is better, but when s/he takes a little cold
it becomes thin; the thick discharge that is necessary to
comfort slacks up, and then s/he gets headache, thirst,
restlessness, anxiety and distress.
Epithelioma of nose and lips.
Inflammation of the throat and tonsils with burning, <by
cold and > by warm drinks. Red and a shriveled mucous
membrane. Diphtheria, exudate is gray and mucous membrane
shriveled, patient is prostrated, anxious, sinking, weak,
feverish, much dryness of the mouth.
Pneumonia , rusty expectoration (excoriating), burning in
chest , bleeding and liver-colored expectoration.
Tendency to bleed , blood bright red , parts take on a
gangrenous state and the hemorrhages become black and there
are little clots like portions of liver (in the vomited
matter and in the stools). Expectoration (thin, watery fluid
intermingled with clots) horribly offensive (state of
gangrene); patient has gone through the period of
restlessness and is now prostrated, sinking, pallid, and
likely enough covered with a cold sweat.
Gastritis, vomiting of everything taken, even a teaspoonful
of water, great prostration and anxiety; dry mouth; > from
drinking warm water (very little at a time) which soon is
vomitted; cold fluids are vomited immediately.
Extreme sensitiveness of stomach, does not want to be
touched > applied heat, temporary relief from warm drinks;
peritonitis; distension of the abdomen, tympanitis; cannot
be handled or touched, but s/he will keep moving due to
restlessness, cannot keep still, finally becomes so weak
that exhaustion takes the place of restlessness.
Dysentery: involuntary passages of urine and faeces, haemorrhage
from the bowels and bloody urine. Cadaveric odor of stool,
like putrid flesh, stool is bloody, watery, brown or black
and horribly offensive.
Gastro-enteritis: thick, bloody discharge , horrible odor,
all substances are vomited, the patient desires to be in a
very warm room, be well covered, wants hot applications,
warm drinks, looks cadaveric and smells cadaveric, (Secale:
wants covers off, cool room, windows open, sponged with cold
water, ice cold drinks).
Cholera: after the gushing is over and the vomiting and
purging have passed, leaving a state of extreme exhaustion,
a state that appears like coma, patient looks almost as if
dead.
Haemorrhoides : burning protrude when at stool, exhausted
after stool, protruding lumps like grapes and burn like
coals of fire are hot, dry and bleeding. Fissures of rectum,
bleed at every stool.
THIRST: During the fever he wants little and often; during
the chill he wants hot drinks.
Eruptions of the genitals with burning.
In little ulcers that burn, syphilitic; herpetic
vesicles , upon the foreskin and upon the labia; chancre or
cancroids with burning, smarting and stinging, especially in
those that are weak, no willingness to heal, that
spread, phagedenic, those that eat from their outer
margins, become larger and larger.
Male: Dropsical condition, dropsy of the penis, oedematous
appearance, penis is enormously swollen and looks like a
water bag; the scrotum, especially the skin of the scrotum,
greatly swollen and humid.
Female: Labia are enormously swollen, burning, stinging
pains, hard and swollen. Erysipelatous inflammation of these
organs, ulcerations, of a syphilitic character; burning,
smarting and stinging that extends up into the vagina, with
great dryness and itching of the vagina. Leucorrhoea
(whitish, watery, thin, copious sometimes it will run down
the thighs) excoriates causing itching and burning with
great suffering.
Menses excoriating, copious, leucorrhoeal flow intermixed
with menstrual flow, profuse and acrid. During
menstruation, stitches in the rectum.
After parturition no urine in the bladder; suppression, or
the bladder is full and it does not pass.
Causticum when woman has not passed the urine and it is
time that she should and when there are no other symptoms to
go on. Aconite if the infant has not passed the urine.
Cancer: Arsenic is a palliative in cancerous affections, in
the uterus and mammary glands. Burning, stinging pains have
disappeared, in incurable cases.
Asthma : Dyspnoea, long standing cases of asthma of a
nervous character; asthma after midnight, patients who
suffer from cold, are very pallid, dry wheezing cough, must
sit up in bed and hold the chest, anxious restlessness with
prostration.
Heart:
great weakness, palpitation from the least exertion or
excitement, anxiety; he cannot walk. Severe paroxysms of
palpitation or attacks of syncope during endocarditis, most
serious complaints of the heart, dropsy of the pericardium,
etc. Angina pectoris. Rheumatism affecting the heart.
Hydropericardium with great irritability. Pulse frequent,
small, trembling. Pulsation through whole body. Heart
becomes weak, pulse thread-like, patient pale and cold,
covered with sweat, pulse very feeble.
Fever: Intermittent. Violence of the chill with excitement,
headache, prostration, dry mouth, desire for hot drinks and
to be covered up warmly, anxious restlessness and
prostration. During the chill there is aching in the bones,
great head congestion with purple fingers and toes.
Prostration with the awful anxiety.
Time of chill: irregularity; coming not twice alike, coming
at any time. It has afternoon chill and after midnight
chill, sometimes in the morning, sometimes at 3 or 4 P.M.,
sometimes at 1 P.M. During the chill, there is sometimes
great thirst, has aversion to cold things, hence can take
only hot drinks, hot teas, etc. During the fever the thirst
increases , s/he has dry mouth, drinks little and often,
just a teaspoonful to wet his/her dry mouth. Water does not
quench thirst, wants but a tablespoonful, little and
often. This runs on into the sweat with prostration,
increased coldness, desire for copious drinks, unquenchable
thirst for cold drinks.
