Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase [SGPT][Alanine aminotransferase (ALT)] Serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT) is an enzyme. It is normally present in liver and heart cells. It is released into blood when the liver is damaged. It is released into blood when the heart is damaged. Therefore blood SGPT level is elevated with liver damage (e.g. from viral hepatitis), blood SGPT level is elevated with an insult to the heart (e.g. from a heart attack). Some medications may raise SGPT levels. Liver dysfunction is directly related to alcohol consumption. Continued drinking may cause unusual rise in the liver enzymes. This condition is known as alcoholic hepatitis. In alcoholic hepatitis you may have pain in right upper abdomen, yellowness of whites of eyes, fever and liver test abnormalities. Rise in SGOT is more than that of SGPT. Useful Medicines Cratægus Oxyacantha-Q Carduus Marianus-Q Ceanothus Americanus-Q Chelidonium-Q Take ½ cup of water – put 5 drops of each medicine in it – drink it slowly.
